Kitten & The Bear – A Perfect Match

With a label that reads ‘Kitten & the Bear,’ these jarred goods had my seal of approval before I even took the first bite.  Couple that with the fact that these preserves are ‘labeled, waxed and sealed up by hand – from the farm to the post office your jam made it from tree-to-jar entirely in-house’ and you are dealing with some mega-watt awesomeness.  This is where I’m supposed to say “Boom,” right?  Isn’t this where the cool kids say “Boom?”

Considering I have a house full of kittens and a pomeranian we lovingly refer to as ‘The Bear,’ I was sold on this product the minute Louise sent me a link to the site.  Secondly, the packaging is TO DIE.  From the delicate doily-like labeling on the jar itself to the wax-label seal and brown paper wrapping adorning the outside, receiving a box of Kitten & the Bear products is something akin to Christmas morning.  Whomever is in charge of K&theB’s marketing and design is a goddamn genius.

But, what about what’s inside?  We all know that beauty is only jar deep and it’s what’s inside that counts most, right?  Well, when the packaging is as fantastic as K&theB’s, perhaps not, but I happily report that these jams, marmalades and preserves are beautiful both inside and out.  All Kitten and the Bear products are handmade in small batches using only the finest ingredients and nothing artificial.  The limited supply allows the team to keep creating and developing unique flavor combinations while keeping the integrity of seasonal ingredients at a maximum.

Plus, “Whenever possible, we drive to local farms and pick the fruit from the trees ourselves,” says the site, adding, “We source many of our ingredients from local, family-owned farms which are dedicated to sustainable and healthy farming practices.  We cook our preserves in a food/kitchen co-op, Hesperides Organica, sharing space with other small food entrepreneurs and farmers.  Finally, we use only traditional methods of preserving with real lemon juice and sugar, and never use any commercial pectin or preservatives.”

Can I get a “Boom” now or what?

Adding to K&theB’s coolness factor is their commitment to introducing new flavors to the market every 1-2 weeks.  People!  Every 1-2 weeks!!!  Any food lover, from home chef to Eric Ripert, knows what an undertaking that is.  It’s crazy fun to come up with new flavor combos, for sure, but it also takes an intense level of dedication to figure out how to make those ingredients play well together while shining on their own.  Kudos to you, Kitten & the Bear, that is some serious jam love and your devoted followers, both new and old, are thankful for it.

Yesterday, when that beautiful package, cradling three beautiful full-sized samples, appeared at Artisan Cheese Company, my fellow cheesemonger, Deanna, and I tore into them as though we had just come upon an oasis after a long four months wandering the desert.  We were greeted by Tangerine and Rosemary Marmalade, Pear and Mulled Wine Jam, and a Spiced Tomato and Tawny Port Jam.

The Tangerine Marmalade was delightful.  Fresh, bright and citrusy while still sweet and light enough to pair with cheese – very difficult for most citrus products, but Kitten & the Bear nailed it.  The Pear Jam had me at hello.  Big chunks of soft sweet pear suspended in an amalgamation of mulled wine …mmm, mmm, yum, yum, good.  Surprisingly, the Spiced Tomato stole our hearts.  We both thought it tasted like pumpkin pie and it was all that we could do to not demolish the entire contents in one sitting.

So, I’d like to give a big ol’ shout out to Kitten and the Bear creators, Sophie Kaftal and Bobby Zielinski.  Thank you for combining your skills to create a product that looks divine on the outside while containing a wealth of wonderful on the inside.  You guys rock and we can’t wait to line our shelves with your wonderful products!
